Unheralded Filipino Arnel Bautista and Chinese Taipei?s Wang Kuo-pin topped the second day of qualifying for the main draw of the World 10-ball Championship slated to start on Monday.
The 37-year-old Bautista from Surigao del Sur was devastating in his final match against Chu Hu-ming of Chinese Taipei, prevailing, 9-3, to join his more illustrious compatriots in the $400,000 event to be played at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
Already entered and expected to carry much of the fight for the Philippines are reigning Asian Games 9-ball king Antonio Gabica, former Reno Open champion Marlon Manalo and Jeffrey de Luna, along with six others.
The charismatic Efren ?Bata? Reyes, Ronnie Alcano and Alex Pagulayan, all former world 9-ball champions, world No. 1 Dennis Orcullo and Robert Gomez, are not entered in the event due to differences with organizers.
Wang, meanwhile, became the third Taiwanese to make the main draw after Chang Pei-wei and Chang Yu-lung. Wang nipped countryman Lu Hui-chan, 9-7.
