MANILA, Philippines—Start spreading the news.
Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao landed in New York City Tuesday night to kick off the promotional tour of his highly intriguing fight against Oscar De La Hoya on Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
With an entourage that included flamboyant trainer Freddie Roach, Pacquiao arrived in the Big Apple via a Continental Airlines flight, according to philboxing.com, for Wednesday’s promo blitz.
The start of a week-long media tour will be held at the historic Statue of Liberty, marking the first time a boxing event is announced in America’s most famous landmark.
Already, Roach said he brought along his war strategy to make sure Pacquiao, reigning WBC lightweight champ and acclaimed as the pound-for-pound king, won’t miss out on his preparation against the sport’s biggest star.
But for the meantime, the objective for both fighters is to make sure the fight generates as much pay-per-view buys as possible.
An LA Times blog last Wednesday said the fight is targeting to break 2.4 million PPV buys, the all-time high recorded last year when De La Hoya fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. also at the MGM Grand.
Top Rank Inc., which co-promotes the fight along with De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, earlier expressed confidence that the fight could beat the previous mark, especially with large followings from Asian fans across the United States and all over the world.
Already, the 12-round welterweight fight has registered a reported $17 million ticket sales, which placed second behind that May 2007 extravaganza won by the now retired Mayweather via split decision.
“The numbers to beat are 2.5 million pay-per-view buys and $165 million in total revenue. So, the barnstorming begins…” said the article.
At a conservative $44.95 per buy, the fight could amass $120 million on PPV alone. Pacquiao’s previous PPV high was 400,000 buys when he fought Juan Manuel Marquez last March.
The media circus will travel eastward to Chicago, Houston, San Antonio and San Francisco before stopping in Los Angeles on Oct. 7, at the streets where the Golden Boy grew up—Whittier Boulevard Arch in East LA.
Insidesports.ph reported that Roach has been satisfied with Pacquiao’s progress, after getting into 152 lbs mainly through jogging and light workouts.
“He looked good and very happy,” Roach was quoted as saying of his ward who didn’t have to go on crash diet to make the 147 lbs catch weight.
