MANILA, Philippines?Jorge Gallent has resigned as coach of the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags, who came within a victory of a Final Four berth in the NCAA men?s basketball tournament recently.
Gallent cited his head coaching responsibilities with Harbour Centre in the Philippine Basketball League as reason for leaving the Stags.
Gallent?s contract at San Sebastian was supposed to end in May 2009.
?I want to concentrate on my coaching duties with Harbour,? Gallent told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a telephone interview.
Harbour is bidding to win a sixth straight PBL crown in the coming season starting next month.
Frank Gusi, San Sebastian?s representative to the NCAA management committee, said that the school still hasn?t found a replacement for Gallent.
Sources said Gallent and the school differed on the recruitment of players for the team.
The Stags are expected to undergo a major lineup change next season with Jason Ballesteros, Franz Delgado, Froilan Saquillo and Jim Viray all using up their playing years.
Despite accepting the job two weeks before the tournament opened, Gallent steered the Stags to a 5-7 record in his first season last year.
The Stags improved to 9-5 in a campaign highlighted by a tournament-high eight-game winning streak. But the Stags lost two straight playoff matches and missed a Final Four berth.
