DUMAGUETE CITY—University of St. La Salle stunned Far Eastern University, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20, Thursday to capture the women’s volleyball title in the 13th Philippine National University Games.
The Lady Stingers rode the scintillating performances of Jade Aplasca, Gianes Dolar, Sheryl Delina and libero Inday Valeriano to avenge their straight-set loss to the Lady Tamaraws in the elimination round at the Valencia Gym.
“We were the only provincial team remaining and we wanted to prove that we are also capable of beating Manila teams,” said La Salle coach Roger Banzuela, whose team eliminated University of Santo Tomas in the semifinals.
Over at the M. Perdices Stadium, De La Salle University and San Beda College shared the limelight at the close of the football tournament of the weeklong event, which has been made as the official national meet for the collegiate level by the Philippine Sports Commission.
De La Salle University edged FEU, 2-1, to capture its ninth women’s football title in 10 years, while San Beda upset West Negros University, 1-0, for the men’s title.
The winning goal for La Salle came in the 64th minute. Samantha Nierras kept the ball alive for Miel Ampil, who made a cross that a rushing Clarissa Lazaro converted with a left-foot blast from close range.
“This is a good morale boost for us heading into the UAAP because we lost to FEU last season,” said DLSU coach Hans Smit. “And we have a winning tradition here which we wanted to keep.”
La Salle’s Fiona Mackenzie broke the ice in the 18th minute but national team standout Ruchelle Latap equalized for FEU eight minutes later.
With the poor pitch condition brought by intermittent rains blunting both teams’ attacks, San Beda kept on throwing long balls and Dave Villon made the most out of the opportunity against the run of play in the 32nd minute.
“This is a big upset,” said San Beda coach Aris Caslib. “We wanted to throw balls upfront because of the bad condition of the pitch.”
FEU handily claimed the women’s basketball crown by clobbering Rizal Technological University, 62-41, at the Lamberto Macais Sports and Cultural Center.
Angeles University Foundation settled for third place in men’s basketball with a 74-71 overtime victory over WNU.
