Pacquiao on the homestretch before fight

LOS ANGELES?Two days before convoying to Las Vegas for the homestretch of preparations for his biggest fight, Manny Pacquiao stepped on the scales to check where he is at for his Dec. 6 Dream Match against Oscar De La Hoya at the MGM Grand.

?He?s 148,? said Roach at the Wild Card gym Saturday afternoon, meaning Pacquiao has to shed just one pound to make the welterweight limit stipulated in the fight contract.

That number is going to go down even more.

Roach said that he wants the 29-year-old southpaw to check in at 144 lbs during the weigh in and at 150 or 151 during fight night to keep his killer speed intact once he climbs the ring to face the bigger, heavier ?Golden Boy? of boxing.

As long as those numbers reflect on the scales, Roach doesn?t care how heavy De La Hoya, who doesn?t allow his weight to be checked for the fight, will be during fight night.

?The heavier Oscar will be, the better I?ll feel,? Roach said.

Pacquiao continued to train hard Saturday, kicking off his day by jogging at the Pan Pacific Park in La Brea here, just off his pricey Palazzo residence. He also shadow-boxed and did crunches. Later in the afternoon, he sparred for six more rounds against light middleweights Rashad Holloway and Marvin Cordova.

?This is the most number of rounds that we?ve done in preparation for the fight,? said assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez. Pacquiao has logged 159 rounds so far. His previous high was 137 while preparing for his rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez early this year. The Gen. Santos native is expected to spar for the last time on Monday, just before his group embarks on its road trip to the Nevada gambling haven.

At nine weeks, it is also his longest preparation for a fight.

But Pacquiao hardly shows any signs of a burnout.

While working out at the Wild Card Gym Saturday afternoon, he wowed a pack of journalists present with shifty footwork and even showed off his dancing skills, drawing laughter and applause from his audience.

At the Pan Pacific Park earlier, he posed gamely with Mexican fans and obliged them when they asked him to flex his muscles?the pound-for-pound champ stripped his shirt in the breath-misting cold of the early morning and flashed his trademark ?Incredible Hulk? pose as cameras clicked everywhere.

Pacquiao told journalists he doesn?t expect any problems with his weight. On Friday, he checked in at 151 pounds just before working out.

?By the time I was done, I was already at 148,? he said.

Pacquiao said he has also watched De La Hoya?s past fights and he has the Golden Boy?s tendencies branded in his brain.

?He always has problems with counter-punchers,? Pacquiao said.

The reigning WBC lightweight champion added that De La Hoya?s pet left jab will give him an opening to unleash several counter moves he and Freddie Roach have penciled into the game plan?especially if it misses.

De La Hoya, meanwhile, continues to weigh at 145 pounds, keeping those numbers in check on a diet of kangaroo and deer meat.

But Roach had said that training at 145 for that long may make the former Olympic champion ?as weak as a kitten.?
