MANILA, Philippines? This burly import was simply too much to handle?figuratively and literally.
Built like a truck but as mobile as a sports car, Jai Lewis drained some of the most important points for Rain or Shine Wednesday night that keyed a 118-112 triumph over Burger King which extended the Elasto Painters? win streak to four games in the Motolite PBA Fiesta Cup elimination round at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
?It was simple, Jai was incredible for us today,? said coach Caloy Garcia of his import, who is listed at 295-pounds but could easily tip the scales at way past 310, after Lewis scored 40 points, plucked down 23 rebounds and had four blocks.
Lewis also showed a tremendously soft touch, making 4-of-6 triple attempts, 7-of-9 two-point tries and missing just two of 16 total free throws. He came into the game making just 2-of-5 from triple territory and 14-of-25 from the stripe in his first three games.
And the most telling of those points came in the stretch, when he knocked down a nonchalantly-taken triple from right corner with 77 seconds left which gave the Painters the lead for good, 109-108.
After padding that lead to six, the Whoppers came to within two after a Gary David layup with 10.9 seconds to go before Lewis then canned two free throws off Shawn Daniels for 116-112 which sealed the franchise?s longest winning streak.
Burger King, which lost coach Yeng Guiao to successive technical fouls with 28.8 ticks to play, dropped to 4-3 after failing to exploit the 24 turnovers committed by the Painters, 16 of them in the first half which the Whoppers closed out with just a three-point lead.
?We can?t commit those many turnovers and (expect to) keep on winning,? Garcia added. ?The nice thing about this team is that everyday, someone steps up. Basically, the thing that?s carrying this team is teamwork.?
