KING'S CUP BOXING
Basadre books finals ticket

MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino boxer Genebert Basadre proved too classy for Korea?s Hwan Joun-buk Tuesday night and moved into the gold medal match of the light welterweight division in the 31st King?s Cup boxing tournament in Bangkok.

The 16-6 verdict was an accurate reflection of the dominance of the Misamis Oriental-born pugilist, who fought from the outside in and proved to be an elusive target for the aggressive Korean.

The 23-year-old Basadre, though, will have his hands full in the final, where he will meet Sansit Apachet of host Thailand.

?Everyone feels Genebert has superior skills,? delegation head and Abap executive director Ed Picson said. ?Of course, the hometown advantage can never be discounted especially because all of our losses here have been to Thais.?

Young Gerson Nietes was the latest Filipino booted out by a Thai boxer, after Joan Tipon, Charley Suarez, and Aston Palicte. One of the highly-regarded prospects from the youth team, the fighter from Bacolod City lost to Keaw Pongprayoon in the semifinals.

RP coaches Ronald Chavez and Elmer Pamisa decided not to field in Nietes for the third round with the score so one-sided.

?He was getting outsmarted and his punches were not scoring,? Chavez said.

Nietes settled for the bronze, duplicating the finish of lightweight Joegin Ladon, who forfeited his semifinal match because of a nasty cut suffered in his 15-5 win over Hudaybergenov of Turkmenistan Monday.
