MANILA, Philippines - A pair of former assistancts will take over as head coaches of two powerhouse teams when the 2009 PBL PG Flex Unity Cup rolls off tomorrow at the San Juan gym.
Glenn Capacio will man the sidelines when Oracle (formerly Harbour Centre) kicks off its bid for a seventh straight crown, while Egay Macaraya will call the shots for Licealiz (formerly Hapee Toothpaste).
But only one coach will debut as a winner as the two squads square off on opening day at 4 p.m., right after the 2 p.m. encounter between Magnolia Purewater and Pharex.
Capacio served as deputy of coach Jorge Gallent, who crossed over to the PBA as Purefoods? assistant after steering the Batang Pier to a record six consecutive championships.
Adjustment, though, won?t be a problem for the Far Eastern University mentor as five Tamaraws suit up for Oracle in the season-ending tournament.
Rico Maierhofer and Edwin Asoro head the Oracle cast along with FEU standouts Benedict Fernandez, Mark Barroca, Mac Baracael, JR Cawaling and Aldrech Ramos.
Macaraya worked for Hapee as an assistant before coach Gee Abanilla focused on his new duties as member of the San Miguel coaching staff.
?[He?s] one added inspiration to us, and I believe Egay is fit for the job,? said team manager Bernard Yang. ?He has been with the league for quite some time now.?
Macaraya, a former San Sebastian star, played for the Magnolia Ice Cream squad that dominated the league two decades ago.
?The coming conference will be a wide open race but I believe we have a pretty good chance now,? said Yang.
Licealiz boasts a revamped roster bannered by Ateneo?s Chris Tiu, La Salle?s JV Casio, University of Santo Tomas? Jervy Cruz and Jose Rizal University?s James Sena.
Tiu reunites with Casio after the two guards trained with the Smart-Gilas Philippine developmental team in recent months.
