MANILA, Philippines?Sherwin Carrera, the Pangasinan-born rider who has been making more waves overseas than in the local cycling circuit, spearheads a formidable six-man Jazysports Beacon Philippine trade team that will see action in two international races in the next two weeks.
The squad that also includes veterans Renato Sambrano, Ericson Obosa, Emelita Atilano and young guns Irish Valenzuela and Reiner Clauna vies in the Jelajah Malaysia 2009 starting April 19.
Carrera won one stage in the 2008 Speedy Tour d? Indonesia last year to key Jazysports? third place finish overall, while Clauna, who finished second behind in the Baguio-Manila race, is hoping to fill the void left by Merculio Ramos and Arnel Querimit who are skipping the international races in favor of the Tour of Luzon.
Team manager Ric Rodriguez Tuesday said the team is targeting a top five finish in the eight-stage bikathon that is classified as a 2.2 men?s elite race by the International Cycling Union.
The team faces a tough field led by squads from the Middle East and the United States, said Rodriguez during the PSA forum at the UN Shakey?s Avenue branch in Manila.
