Safina remains on top of world rankings

PARIS - Dinara Safina remains top of the WTA rankings released on Monday despite being beaten by third-ranked Venus Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals.

Venus' sister and Wimbledon champion Serena Williams is second in the world rankings.

There was no change in the top ten with the biggest progression by Spaniard Maria Martinez Sanchez, who moves up 12 places to 42nd after her win in Bastad, Sweden.

Budapest winner Agnes Szavay of Hungary moves up ten places to world number 27, as beaten finalist Patty Schnyder of Switzerland returns to the top 20.

The WTA Top 10 are as follows:

3. Venus Williams (USA) 6.617

4. Elena Dementieva (RUS) 6.591

5. Svetlana Kuznetzova (RUS) 6.071
