MCIAA edges BIR in Arena-7 caging

THE Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) edged the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) led by skipper Yoli Meso, 55-54 for its second win in as many games Thursday in the Arena-7 Sportsfest 2009 basketball tournament at the Visayan Glass Sports Arena.

BIR got to an impressive, 16-10 start behind the pair of 6-foot-1 center Engel Sievert and Mark Lariosa and continued to dominate the succeeding periods to post a 49-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.

But MCIAA waxed hot behind Dito Bejoc and Boy Alfeche that resulted in five deadlocks in the final quarter including a, 52-all tie with 40 seconds left.

In the ensuing play, offguard Yoli Meso gave BIR a, 54-52 lead with 12 seconds remaining before MCIAA?s Manny Fuentes canned a prayer-packed shot from beyond the arc that lifted MCIAA to the one-point win.

Alfeche led MCIAA with 11 points while Pedy Bejoc and Boboy Ciriaco chipped in 10 points apiece. Sievert paced BIR with 11 points.
