MANILA, Philippines?Rabeh Al-Hussaini?s high-impact performance in the UAAP over the years has put a great deal of stress on his left foot.
After going under the knife to remove bone spurs in his ailing foot, the 2009 UAAP Finals MVP had to beg off from joining the Smart Gilas-Pilipinas five, manager Frankie Lim said Sunday.
Al-Hussaini, who joined Smart Gilas in the PBA Philippine Cup last year, might sit it out for at least five weeks before he goes through gradual training and therapy.
Lim said the former Ateneo Blue Eagle could miss the FIBA Asia Champions Cup in Doha, Qatar in May and the national team?s summer training camps in Serbia, Las Vegas and Vancouver, depending on how he recovers from the surgery.
?I hope his (Al-Hussaini) foot heals quickly,? said Lim. ?He?s an important addition to the team since we need more size in the shaded area.?
Al-Hussaini has already missed two international stints?the Dubai International in January and the ongoing 10-day Australian Tour where the Nationals are in the final match of their six-game stint with Australian ballclubs.
The 6-foot-6 Al-Hussaini had to beg off from the Dubai International due to school commitments at the Ateneo de Manila University.
Aldrech Ramos and Rey Guevarra also remain in sick bay. Ramos is recovering from a respiratory ailment while Guevarra has a hurting knee.
Despite their absence, the Nationals are doing well against the Aussies.
Gilas prevailed over the host?s Under-19 squad (78-76), Australia?s second national team (79-73), the Canberra Gunners (101-84) and New South Wales (82-63). The no-decision was a 73-73 tie forged by Australia?s second squad.
