Cebu to host qualifying tilt for eskrima

Cebu Daily News

THE country’s bid of reclaiming its place atop the world eskrima scene will be taking another bold step as Cebu hosts the 2nd qualifying tournament for the training pool of the national team that will be competing in the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Championships.

The tournament will be held this weekend at the Parkmall in Mandaue City. The Philippines last held the world title in the 90s. The winds have now changed and the USA has lorded over the competition the last four years, including last year's tournament which was held here in Cebu.

This year's worlc championship will be held in Mexico City.

WEKAF Vice President Gerald O. Canete said that the upcoming event is a chance for them to select world class caliber Cebuano fighters to represent the Philippines.

“This tournament is designed for us to discover new talents and fighters. As soon as we will see them, we will help them, fighters will be pooled for a selection process before the World Championship,” Gerald said in a press conference at YO.U in Parkmall.

Cańete also added that they are expecting teams from the other regions to participate and give the Cebuanos a run for their money. The Atan Guardo, Gervince, Xkrim and Parkmall-backed tournament will start at 1pm after a short opening ceremony. Sayaw or Forms will open the competition while fighters will have their hands full in the Sparring competition.

Tournament winners will have an edge in joining the training pool, which will be based in WEKAF World Headquarters in Sto Nino Village, Banilad, Cebu City. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
