MANILA, Philippines?Charo Soriano made sure her first and only quarterfinal game for Ateneo-Oracare would be a memorable one.
Soriano, the alumna guest player, fired 10 points to help the Lady Eagles turn back elimination-round tormentor Far Eastern University, 25-16, 26-24, 24-26, 25-14, Sunday at the start of the quarterfinals of the Shakey?s V-League Season 6 second conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
?We?d have wanted her to be here for the rest of the quarterfinals,? said Ateneo coach Clint Malazo of Soriano, who scored the drop shot that gave the Lady Eagles a 2-set lead.
?She really contributed to get us this win, which gives us confidence for the bigger games ahead,? added Malazo, whose squad moved into a tie for third with a 5-3 slate.
Soriano is leaving for the United States for a two-week vacation. She will be back in time for the semifinals?if Ateneo gets that far.
In the second game, Adamson University pounced on an out-of-sync San Sebastian College squad for a 25-15, 25-13, 25-12 decision in just 54 minutes, the quickest win in the tournament so far.
The Lady Falcons drew 15 points each from Pau Soriano and Angela Benting and rose to an even 4-4.
Unable to reproduce the form that saw them take six of their first seven games, the Lady Tams fell to 6-2.
With San Sebastian absorbing its third loss in five games, however, the Lady Tamaraws kept solo second behind unbeaten leader University of Santo Tomas.
Malazo said Soriano?s absence will allow him to give more exposure to players seeing action in the UAAP tournament next month.
Fille Cainglet topscored with 19 points on 15 attacks and Angeline Gervacio added 16.
