MANILA, Philippines--Polytechnic University of the Philippines kicked off its title-retention bid on a winning note while host Rizal Technological University pulled off twin wins at the start of the 22nd SCUAA-NCR basketball tournament at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong.

PUP walloped Technological University of the Philippines, 106-76, behind the game-high 37 points of Sonny Legaspi.

RTU whipped Philippine Normal University, 127-40, in the men?s division while its female squad routed Philippine Normal University, 66-14.

Earist likewise swept its inaugural basketball assignments.

Rigor Robrigado and Kevin Cayubit combined for 55 points to lead the Francis Rodriguez-mentored Earist past Philippine State College of Aeronautics, 67-61. The women?s team then outclassed PUP, 60-40.

In volleyball competition, PUP beat PNU, 25-19, 25-22, 25-17, in the morning matches, and downed Philsca, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21, later in the day.

Sen. Mar Roxas graced the opening rites while Dr. Jose Macaballug, RTU president, made the ceremonial toss.
