A FORMER OLYMPIAN LEADS A cast of hundred senior swimmers plunging back into action in the 1st Speedo International Swim Masters Series Philippines this weekend.
Local tankers, headed by 1988 Seoul Olympian Guy Concepcion, try to recall their old forms against swimmers from the United States, Japan and France on June 20 at the Trace Aquatic Center in Los Baños, Laguna and in the open water on June 21 at Janao Bay in Anilao, Batangas.
“I’ve always felt I’ve never stopped swimming, although my last competition was way back in the 1990s,” the 40-year-old Concepcion said in a press conference Wednesday at the Speedo Store in Bonifacio High Street, Taguig City.
The Davis Aquatic Masters team, led by coach Rick Powers, will represent the United States.
“We have 19 members who came over; our swimmers are in their early 30s to 69,” said Powers, who attended the press briefing with Speedo vice president for operations Manish Mahtani and Davis swimmers Scott Harris and Karen Gilligan.
Alaska owner and sports buff Fred Uytengsu and triathlete Tricia Chiongbian are also expected to compete.
