Holcim netfest qualifiers

THE CHASE FOR BERTHS IN THE Holcim/ITF Women’s Circuit Week I starts today with 32 players fighting for six slots in the main draw at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Players from 14 countries are vying for seats in the tournament proper which gets under way tomorrow. The total purse is $10,000.

South Korea’s Kim Sun-jung, You Ju-hee and Kim Jun-eun, and Taiwanese Liu Chi-fan, Miao Yui-lynn, Chen Yen-ling and Lee Pei-chi head the aspirants. The top six players will join the seeded entries.

Comebacking Maricris Fernandez-Gentz, who won the inaugural staging of the event in 1998, siblings Anna Christine and Anna Clarice and Riza Zalameda have been given wild-card berths in the main draw.

THE COUNTRY’S TOP RIDERS PLUNGE into action today in the Roadbike Philippines-711 2009 Manila Criterium Grand Prix second leg today.

Registration will open at 6 a.m. at the Rajah Sulaiman Park along Roxas Blvd., the start and finish line of the 7.2 kilometer-route. Cyclists will traverse Quirino Avenue and T. M. Kalaw.

With the exception of the Filipino-Chinese and Elite Open divisions, the rest of the categories are according to age group—56 years old and above, under 25, 26 to 35, 36 to 45 and 46 to 55.
