AKIKO SAN PEDRO and Margaret Flores came away with straight-set wins over their respective seeded rivals to barge into the quarterfinals of the First Gen Juntaphil Metro Age Group Tennis Championships at the Olivarez tennis courts in Parañaque yesterday.
San Pedro, who outlasted Mariel Alcantara, 6-1, 7-5, in the second round, overwhelmed sixth seed Kathleen Espedido to advance in the 12-and-under girls division of the event sponsored by Smart and presented by First Gen Corp.
Flores whipped Marina Lugtu, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 5 Kyla Orillosa, 6-3, 6-0.
In other matches, Ericka Mandurio ousted No. 8 Camille So, 6-2, 6-2, to set up a quarterfinal duel with Jade Capadocia.
Seventh seed Colleen Sioson bested Ingrid Gonzales, 6-2, 6-4.
In the boys’ 18-under, No. 3 Juan Gabriel Pena prevailed over Neil Umlas, 6-1, 6-0, to arrange a clash with No. 6 Ed Amor, who repulsed Luis Asistio Jr., 7-6 (3) 7-6 (2).
