MANILA, Philippines — Angel Canino, Eya Laure, and Sisi Rondina formed a potent trio for Alas Pilipinas’ first AVC Challenge Cup game, but they all gave credit to leadership and playmaking of veteran setter Jia De Guzman.
Bringing her solid experience from the Denso AiryBees in Japan, De Guzman led Alas to a 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 win over Australia before an energetic 4,945 crowd on Thursday evening at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
But the Alas team captain believes it was a total team effort with the help of her fellow veteran and libero Dawn Macandili-Catindig. FULL STORY

MANILA, Philippines — Sisi Rondina stood tall on her Alas Pilipinas debut, towing the Philippines past the much taller Australia, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21, in the AVC Challenge Cup Thursday evening at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The 5-foot-6 outside spiker delivered 16 points built on 15 attacks and an ace to outplay the Australians, who boast an average height of 5-foot-11. FULL STORY

Despite only having a short preparation time, Alas Pilipinas bucked an opening set upset to log its first victory in the AVC Challenge Cup opposite a much taller Australian side, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21, Thursday night at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
La Salle’s Angel Canino, one of the young bloods in the lineup, and Eya Laure provided big numbers for Alas with 17 points apiece.
Canino landed 15 attacks, a block and an ace for the strong opening game win and Laure 14 attacks, two aces and a block to give Australia its first loss after defeating Chinese-Taipei on Wednesday. FULL STORY

MANILA, Philippines — India earned its second win in Pool A, dominating Chinese Taipei, 25-19, 25-13, 25-16, ahead of its duel against the home team, Alas Pilipinas, in the AVC Challenge Cup on Thursday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Soorya Soorya imposed her will at the frontline, tallying eight of the team’s 14 blocks to finish with a game-high 15 points to stay unbeaten in Pool B following their opening day win over Iran.
“I’m feeling very happy that we won and we are hoping that we can get more wins. Our teammates are very supportive and our coaches, the India audience are very supportive. This time, we’re gonna win this tournament,” said Soorya as only the top two teams of each group will advance to the semifinals next week. FULL STORY

But where De Guzman will next take her act after leading Alas Pilipinas in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup starting on Thursday is still up in the air.
