Carlos Yulo, EJ Obiena to receive cash reward from Manila LGU

MANILA, Philippines — Olympians Carlos Edriel Yulo and Ernest John “EJ” Obiena will receive a cash reward from the Manila local government unit following their achievements in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan announced on Tuesday.

Carlos Yulo, who bagged two gold medals in the gymnastics competition for two consecutive days, will receive a total of P2 million — P1 million for each gold medal he won.

“The Manila City Government will award Carlos Yulo a total of P2,000,000 (two million pesos) with P1,000,000 for each gold medal he won. This is our way of honoring his talent, dedication, and outstanding contribution to Philippine sports,” said Lacuna-Pangan in a statement.

“Nakaukit na siya sa kasaysayan sa pagkapanalo ng dalawang gintong medalya sa 2024 Paris Olympics. Ang kanyang nakakabilib na performance sa floor exercise at vault events ay nagdala ng matinding karangalan at saya sa Lungsod ng Maynila at sa buong bansa,” Lacuna-Pangan added.

(His feat of winning two golds in the 2024 Paris Olympics is already written in history. His exceptional performance in the floor exercise and vault events brought great pride and joy to the City of Manila and the whole country.)

Yulo is also expected to receive at least P29 million worth of cash bonuses, aside from a condominium worth P32 million and other incentives.

Meanwhile, EJ Obiena, who finished 4th in the pole vault finals, will be awarded P500,000.

“Kinikilala ng Pamahalaang Lungsod ng Maynila ang kanyang pagsusumikap at bibigyan siya ng P500,000 (five hundred thousand pesos) bilang pasasalamat sa kanyang tiyaga at natatanging performance,” the statement read.

(The City of Manila recognizes his dedication and he will be given P500,000 as a token of gratitude for his perseverance and exemplary performance.)

Furthermore, Mayor Lacuna-Pangan added, “Ang paglalakbay at mga tagumpay ni EJ ay patuloy na nagbibigay inspirasyon sa maraming batang atleta sa Maynila at sa buong bansa.”

The Manila mayor also commended that the two athletes’ “dedication, discipline, and community sport “will always be a source of pride for the City of Manila.”

A grand heroes’ parade also awaits Yulo and Obiena, who both hail from Manila City.
