Bulls crush Tigers; Dolphins rip Patriots
MANILA—Batangas raked Alabang for 14 hits and pulled off an eight-inning 12-2 rout Sunday in an impressive start in Baseball Philippines Series 7 at the Felino Marcelino Stadium in Taguig.
Starter Romeo Jasmin and relief pitcher Vladimir Eguia allowed only three hits for the two-time champion Batangas Bulls who finished off the hapless Tigers under the 10-run rule with a six-run blast in the eighth inning.
Cebu bounced back from a narrow loss to defending champion Manila the other day by whipping Taguig, 10-5, in the second game.
The Cebu Dolphins erupted for eight runs in seventh to match the 1-1 card of the Patriots, who clobbered the Quezon City batters in the opener Saturday.
Leading 6-2 after six innings, the Bulls exploded in the next frame with two-run doubles from 16-year-old Charles Catangui and Vio Roxas and a two-run triple from 15-year-old pinch-hitter Dio Remollo.
Remollo is best known for setting a record as the youngest player to hit a home run in a regulation game at the Rizal Memorial Ballpark last year.
“Actually our thrust right now is to go for young players,” said Batangas team manager Randy Dizer of the Bulls, the Series 3 and 5 champions. Dizer said they didn’t want the Bulls to suffer in case the national players are barred from the league when the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association pushes through with its own league. “As you can see we only have one national player (Roxas),” said Dizer. “We are also preparing for the coming UAAP this November since we have six collegiate players.” The league is presented by Dunkin’ Donuts and organized by Community Sports and sponsored by Gatorade, Rawling’s, Industrial Enterprises, Harbour Centre and The Heritage Park.
