Top PBA pick goes through tough daily routine
MANILA—Unknown to many, Air21 top rookie pick Siverino “Nonoy” Baclao completes a daily routine far different from his fellow players in the PBA.
Baclao, the surprise No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, is juggling his time finishing his bachelor’s degree in Inter-Disciplinary studies at Ateneo and playing for the Express.
Baclao, 23, signed a three-year P8.5 million deal with the Express last September and has emerged as one of the league’s top defensive players.
Wealth and fame however have not changed his mindset towards academics now that he is just a few units away from graduating.
“It’s difficult and sometimes tiring,” said the 6-foot-5 power forward. “Hopefully, by March I’ll be finished with school. I don’t want to waste the opportunity. I feel so privileged to study at Ateneo. The Ateneo alumni, my family and my friends have all been very supportive and encouraging me to finish school.”
Baclao is no stranger to adversity, having grown up to a difficult life in Bacolod City.
As he grew taller in his teenage years, Baclao saw basketball as a way out of poverty and help him provide a better life for his family, nurturing his dream of making the pro league.
“We’re not that well-off and if not for basketball, I wouldn’t have gotten some of the luxury I am enjoying now,” said Baclao.
Because of his height and defensive prowess while playing for West Negros University, Baclao easily attracted several Manila-based collegiate squads in the University Games in 2005.
Ateneo was one of the schools that signified their intention of recruiting Baclao and the big man, with the help of WNU sports director Tony Agustin, who now acts as the player’s agent, decided to join the Blue Eagles, whom he helped lead to back-to-back crowns in 2008 and 2009.
Though he admitted that his offensive skills leave a lot to be desired, Baclao is comfortable with his role as a defensive player and a rebounder.
“Everyone wants to score so I focus on defense,” said Baclao, who tallied a season-high tying six blocks in the Express’ victory over Alaska two weeks ago.
