MANILA—The Philippine Sports Commission will tap more women in the national pool following a recommendation by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Association of National Olympic Committees (Anoc).
In partnership with the Philippine Olympic Committee, the PSC will increase to 40 percent the number of women athletes in all disciplines in the 500-member national pool.
“It can be done. In fact, we are now studying the implementation of mixed gender in disciplines dominated by men,” said PSC chair Richie Garcia.
Among the sports where women participation will be encouraged are billiards, tennis, swimming relays, table tennis, golf, badminton and bowling.
Garcia said the resurgence of interest by women athletes in combat sports like boxing, taekwondo, karatedo, wrestling and wushu will also make it easy for the PSC to comply with the proposal of the IOC and Anoc.
