FILIPINO amateur boxers will no longer wear head gear and singlets when they fight in four major overseas tournaments this year.

Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (Abap) executive director Ed Picson said the International Boxing Association (Aiba) has decided to do away with the head gear and singlets for elite fighters 19 to 40 years old.

Picson added the 10-point scoring system will now be implemented, where only three of the five judges’ scores will be counted.

“According to studies made by the Aiba, wearing head guards hardly had any effect, in so far as safety is concerned,” Picson said in yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s Ermita.

The Filipino pugs should be ready with these changes beginning with the Asian Elite Championship in Amman (June 30 to July 9), followed by the Aiba World Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan (Oct. 11 to 27), and the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar (Dec. 11 to 22).
