12 national athletes get IOC funding

12:00 PM November 08, 2010
Twelve Filipino athletes will get special treatment from the International Olympic Committee in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics.
Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. said the Olympic Solidarity, a funding organization under the IOC, will financially assist the training of 12 elite athletes handpicked by the local Olympic body.
Cojuangco said these 12 beneficiaries will receive US$500 each or roughly P21,500 a month as training allowance.
He added the POC would guide and help the athletes put the financial support to good use.
The aid will be funneled from the broadcast revenue generated by the IOC from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Part of the broadcast earnings will go to the Olympic Solidarity, an IOC organization that provides financial support to National Olympic Committees, such as the POC, with the greatest need.
Cojuangco didn’t mention the possible candidates for the IOC doleout.
Some of the nominees, however, are tipped to come from boxing and taekwondo, disciplines which have a good probability of winning medals in the Olympics.
Since the silver finish of boxer Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, no athlete from a regular calendared sport has won a medal for the country.
Meanwhile, the 11-man advance party for Team Philippines headed by team official Moying Martelino was scheduled to leave for Guangzhou, China, Sunday evening.
Joining Martelino were athletes John Baylon of judo and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who were tapped to represent the RP contingent in the 16th Asian Games torch relay on Nov. 10.
The Philippines will send a 282-strong delegation, including 188 athletes in 28 sports, in the Asiad on Nov. 12-17. Martelino said the main wave of 140 athletes will leave on Nov. 10.
Baylon, a nine-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, and Diaz will run for one kilometer in the 90-km torch relay where each of the 45 competing countries has sent two athletes.
