FERNANDO Montiel of Mexico stopped Filipino Jaderes Padua in the third round of their WBC International super bantamweight title fight Saturday in Guerrero, Mexico.
Montiel, who lost his WBC and WBO bantamweight title to Nonito Donaire Jr. in 2011 and is now trying to rejuvenate his ring careerat 34, put away the 22-year-old Padua one minute and 12 seconds into the third of their 12-round bout at Hotel Azul Ixtapa in Ixtapa Zihuantanejo, according to a report on boxing portal boxrec.com.
Another Filipino, Weng Haya, was knocked out by Mexican Miguel Berchelt in 2:57 of the second round of their super featherweight tiff in Yucatan, also Saturday.
It was Padua’s second straight defeat via stoppage. The fighter from Albay also took a TKO loss to Roma Rojas, another Mexican, in the second round last April.
Montiel improved his record to 50-4-2 with 38 KOs. Padua fell to 8-3-1 (5KOs).
Haya, the 24-year-old from Cebu, is now 17-6 (9 KOs). Marc Anthony Reyes
