MANDAUE CITY—Prime ring prospect Dodie Boy Peñalosa Jr. stretched his knockout streak to six Saturday night, battering Thai Kong Kiatpracha Gym of Thailand into submission in three rounds in the main bout of the “Laban ng Lahi: Dugong Kampeon” fight card at the Mandaue City Sports Complex here.
In contrast, former World Boxing Council flyweight champion Rodel Mayol was tested to the hilt before hacking out a 10-round unanimous decision over Jayson Rotoni in the fight card staged by GerryPens Promotions and GMA-7.
The 21-year-old Dodie Boy Jr. chased the smaller Thai in the first two rounds, using his longer reach to repeatedly land hooks to the body and head.
Kiapratchai, who tipped the scales at 122 pounds just like Dodie Boy Jr., was in full retreat in the third round.
With two minutes gone in the round, the Thai was trapped in a corner and took a series of body blows, including a right hook that sent him down to the canvas.
Kiatpracha stood up only to be met by a hail of punches that put him down two more times, forcing the referee to stop the fight with 2:16 gone in the round.
The 5-foot-7 Dodie Boy Jr., who is being groomed to fight in the undercard of Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez III on Nov. 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada, kept his 100-percent knockout rate (six for six) while handing the overmatched Thai his ninth loss against five wins and a draw.
Mayol dominated the first two rounds but was tagged by a solid left that nearly sent him down in the third round.
Using his experience, the 31-year-old Mayol quickly recovered and relentlessly pounded Rotoni for the rest of the 10-round bout.
Mayol won on scores of 98-92, 98-92 and 99-91.
The Mayol-Rotoni slugfest compensated for Randy Petalcorin’s disappointing victory by disqualification over Michael Rodriguez in their battle for the PABA interim light flyweight crown.
Though Petalcorin floored Rodriguez with a right hook in the seventh, the fight took an unexpected twist in the eighth.
Petalcorin first got tagged and was pushed down. As the referee tried to separate them, Rodriguez again hit Petalcorin, who was well ahead in the scorecards, in the head.
Rodriguez was eventually disqualified for landing an illegal blow with 1:39 gone in the round.
Though elated by the lopsided victory of Dodie Boy Jr., former International Boxing Federation two-division world champion Dodie Boy Sr. said he’d prefer another fight for his son before letting him loose in the international arena.
“He still lacks the killer instinct,” Dodie Boy Sr. told Manila-based sportswriters.
