With six corporate squads beefed up by some of the sport’s biggest stars, the Philippine Superliga takes off Sunday as the country’s first volleyball club league.
The PSL opens at Philsports Arena with Cignal, Petron, PLDT, Cagayan Valley, PCSO-Bingo Milyonaryo and the Philippine Army making up the roster of teams in the maiden staging of the tournament.
The Superliga aims to be the ultimate destination for the country’s stars after they finish their tours of duty with their schools.
Gracing the opening ceremony is Asian Volleyball Confederation executive vice president Shanrit Wongprasert, who will also be present for the tournament draw at 1:30 p.m. today at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.
The league was launched last night in a glamorous program with Ramon “Tats” Suzara, PSL president and chair of the AVC development and marketing committee; and Philip Ella Juico, PSL chair and former chair of the Philippine Sports Commission among those in attendance.
Petron will be bannered by Ateneo stars Gretchen Jo and Charo Soriano with former University of Santo Tomas ace and national team member Roxanne Pimentel as skipper. Vilet Ponce-de Leon will coach the squad.
