MANILA, Philippines — Roi Sumang saved the day again for University of the East.

Sumang uncorked a deep triple with 3.7 seconds left, giving UE the final lead for a 71-67 win over National University in the UAAP season 79 men’s basketball tournament.

Sumang completed his heroics by converting the free throw he was awarded following a foul by reigning MVP Bobby Ray Parks.

“Sumang, brought the biggest baggage and that was his heart,” said head coach Boyzie Zamar. “He told me, ‘Coach give it to me.'”

Sumang finished with 19 points — accounting for the last seven points of UE in the fourth quarter, where the Red Warriors and the Bulldogs exchanged leads.

Charlies Mammie showcased his true strength, scoring 15 points and hauling down 20 rebounds for UE, which finally barged into the win column.

“It was difficult after our loss to FEU.  We were humbled, devastated and humiliated. I think we’re now on the road to redemption,” said Zamar.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, fell to 1-1.

Emmanuel Mbe paced NU with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Parks couldn’t get his rhythm all game as the UE defense concentrated on him– going 3-of-16 from the field to finish with just 11.
