Philippine Super Liga blasts off

HOPING to cash in on volleyball’s newfound fame, the Philippine Super Liga blasts off today with a hefty triple-header featuring the hottest female spikers in the country at Philsports Arena.

Organizers reported that 7,500 printed tickets flew off the shelves for the inaugural which begins with a 1 p.m. opening rites.

Cignal, powered by University of Santo Tomas’ Venus Bernal and La Salle’s Michelle Datuin, takes center stage at 2 p.m. against Petron that will pin its hopes on Ateneo’s Gretchen Ho and Charo Soriano, and former PH team stalwart Roxanne Pimentel.

Towering beauty Michelle Gumabao will lead PCSO Bingo Milyonaryo along with fellow La Salle bets Maureen Penetrante and Ivy Remulla and Stephanie Mercado as it goes up against PLDT-My DSL, spearheaded by Lou Anne and Laurence Latigay of San Sebastian and Pau Soriano of Adamson.

Cagayan Valley, which will bank on Wendy Semana, Jeck Dionela and Royce Tubino battles TSL-Philipine Army.

League commissioner Ian Laurel said all teams are balanced on paper, although Petron, PCSO-Bingo Milyonaryo and Cagayan Valley emerge as top picks.

PSL chair Philip Ella Juico said they hope the league will take volleyball’s popularity to new heights and also hinted at bringing in foreign players in the next conferences.
