Dumandan rallies to rule ICTSI Mimosa
Marvin Dumandan birdied the last two holes for a two-under-par 70 yesterday to complete a come-from-behind victory in the ICTSI-Mimosa Challenge at the Mimosa Golf and Country Club in Clark Field, Pampanga. Dumandan, who had earlier rounds of 72-72, easily overhauled Ramil Bisera’s two-shot lead overnight with steady play and became the circuit’s first back-to-back winner. “It’s nice to win again,” said Dumandan, who finished with a 214 total for 54 holes in clinching the P200,000 top prize in the tournament organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc., said in Filipino. Dumandan, already the winner at Royal Northwoods last month, was installed as the solid pick here after Juvic Pagunsan and four other crack pros opted to play in the Barclay’s Singapore Open. Bisera opened with three straight bogeys, submitted a 76, and settled for a tie for second at 218 with Anthony Fernando and amateur Carl Santos-Ocampo, who both had 71s. Bisera and Fernando went home with P92,500 each. Cassius Casas and the long-hitting Orlan Sumcad also churned out 70s and finished in a fifth-place tie with Antonio Asistio II and Benjie Magada at 220. Asistio, the former national team mainstay who is in his rookie year as a pro, double-bogeyed the par-3 14th for a 74, the same card turned in by Magada, the Orchard leg champ. Ferdie Aunzo ballooned to a 79 and fell into a share of 15th, nine strokes behind at 223. He teed off tied for second with Dumandan.
