PH wins over Canada, yields to Germany in Homeless World Cup

MANILA, Philippines — Philippines settled for a 1-1 card in the penultimate day of the secondary stages of the 2013 Homeless World Cup at Lake Malta in Poznan, Poland.

The Filipinos scored a 3-1 win over Canada, then later fell to Germany in a penalty shootout, according to the tournament’s official website.

Next on the Philippines’ list in Group E are Finland and Northern Ireland.

On Thursday, the Philippines kicked off its second round campaign with a 4-2 win over Korea after struggling mightily against squads like Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and dropping five straight.

Led by longtime coach Rudy del Rosario, this year’s delegation is bannered by Jerry Patrick Noni Sinsoi from Zamboanga del Sur, Juan Paulo Santos from Manila, Nen Ryant Minoza from Argao, Cebu, Larry Gonzales from Iloilo, Valentino Tolentino from Pangasinan, Daryl T. Fernandez from Tayabas, Quezon,  and Elson B. Dorimon from Cebu City.

The Filipinos, who joined the 2012 edition in Mexico City, 2011 in Paris, France and 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were ranked 15th entering this year’s competition.

The annual tournament, joined by 64 nations this year, uses the global sport of football as a tool for awareness and change among the homeless.
