(Asian Games) Boxers eye at least an Asiad gold

11:21 AM November 14, 2010

GUANGZHOU—At least one gold. Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines president Ricky Vargas yesterday said he would be pleased if one of the six Filipino boxers end up with a gold medal in the 16th Asian Games.

“We’ll be happy if we could bring home at least one gold,” said Vargas. “But we are pinning our hopes on four boxers. The two others, however, are capable of pulling off a surprise.” Vargas said female flyweight Annie Albania, featherweight Charly Suarez, and brothers Rey Saludar (flyweight) and light fly Victorio Saludar III are the country’s brightest gold-medal prospects. Other members of the crack boxing contingent, which won two golds and two bronze medals in the 2006 Doha Asian Games, are light welter Delfin Boholst and Wilfredo Lopez. The boxing draw is scheduled today with the initial bouts set tomorrow.
