MANILA, Philippines — Emman Monfort scored a career-best 22 points as Barako Bull zapped Meralco, 90-89, in the 38th PBA Governors’ Cup Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.
The Energy Cola, who dropped a close decision to the Talk ‘N Text in overtime last Friday, improved to 1-1.
“Ginawa ko lang yung pinapagawa sa akin ni coach,” said the 16th pick in the 2012 PBA Draft Monfort, who also grabbed seven rebounds.
“It was a very tough game for us,” said Barako Bull coach Rajko Toroman. “I hope this win can give us special energy.”
The Bolts, who fell to 1-1 after winning against Petron Blaze, had a couple of chances to win but on both occasions their import Mario West missed on tough-angled runners.
Monfort was huge in the second half with 17 of his 22 coming in the final two quarters including a right elbow jumper that gave his team a 90-87 cushion with only 1:39 left.
West had 33 points, nine rebounds and four assists while Barako Bull import Mike Singletary tallied 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds but had two turnovers down the stretch.
