PHILIPPINE boxing’s losing spell is far from over.
Fil-American Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton joined the growing line of Filipino world champions who have fallen by the wayside after losing her comeback fight to Texan-Mexican Celina Salazar by unanimous decision in Cancun, Mexico, Saturday night.
Salazar improved his win-loss-draw record with one stoppage to 5-1-2 while Julaton slipped to 12-4-1 with two knockouts.
It was a sorry loss for the 33-year-old Julaton who was eyeing a crack at another world title fight in the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez mega fight on Sept. 14.
Julaton became the latest casualty of what is regarded as the Filipino ring curse since last year that saw superstars and world champions Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire Jr., and Brian Viloria losing their respective titles.
She climbed the ring after posting back to back victories over Yolanda Segura by unanimous decision, and Abigail Ramos by first-round technical knockout, both in Yucatan, Mexico last year.
Julaton, who trained in Las Vegas under Angelo Reyes, lost her WBO and IBA women’s super bantamweight crown two years ago. Marc Anthony Reyes
