Nonito Donaire’s ultimate goal: 6 world titles

Nonito Donaire Jr. has one good reason to make sure he goes unscathed in his scheduled Nov. 6 bout against a yet undetermined opponent.

He has to look good for his wedding, which takes place six days later.

“[It] is no problem as long as I don’t get injured,” said Donaire. “Actually I am excited that I will fight and that it will be followed by my wedding.”

He said this would put “plenty of pressure especially on me in the training camp. I must not get hurt so I will need to train very hard.”

Donaire who up to now doesn’t know who his opponent will be said “ I don’t pick my opponents but I prefer the very best so it would drive me to train very hard because if I meet the best it motivates me to be at my best in training. If that happens I know nobody can beat me.”

He said “in my heart and in my mind, body and spirit I know I will give it everything.”

Donaire, who returned to the fold of Top Rank, said he is eager to fight the winner of the October clash between champions Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan and Rafael Marquez of Mexico as promised by Arum. He said the planned January 2012 showdown with the winner “will be a great fight. For me to face the winner is exciting because they are both champions and they are both great fighters.”

Donaire, who is ranked No. 3 in the pound for pound rankings of the prestigious Ring Magazine, said “if my opponent is good I enjoy the fight even more.”

Noting that he is looking at a fourth world title at 122 pounds against the winner of the Nisioka-Marquez battle, Donaire said he had “no problem at the weight” although he had enjoyed the food in the Philippines and had gone up to 145 pounds but had come down to between 133-134 pounds.

Donaire said he will train at the Undisputed Gym in San Francisco under former world champion Robert Garcia and at times would train at the Oxnard Gym.

He said it was convenient to train in the Bay Area of California not because of the availability of good sparring partners but more because his training staff, including his strength and conditioning coach, his speed trainer and his nutritionist, were all there together.

Donaire who has set his eyes on more world titles said “if the Lord gives me a chance to win six it would be a blessing. I will do all I can and train hard to make it come true.”

Now that his contractual differences with Arum and Top Rank have been resolved Donaire said “I am excited because I have no problems to think about and I am excited to return for a fight and, of course, my wedding.”

Donaire attended a confirmation mass at the San Miguel church next to Malacanang on Thursday afternoon which he described as “something I needed to do. It’s a beginning for a family. I believe that if I want to have a family this (confirmation) has to happen. This is the first step and in preparation for my wedding.”
