Rising Suns log 3rd straight Shakey’s V-L win

CAGAYAN unleashed another explosive attacking display to dump Philippine Navy in straight sets yesterday and stay unbeaten in the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 Open Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena.

Unrelenting right from the start, the Rising Suns came away with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-16 triumph in just 61 minutes.

Angeli Tabaquero and Aiza Maizo combined for 25 points for the Rising Suns, who extended their unbeaten start to three matches in the season-ending tournament.

The Rising Suns flaunted their attacking depth with nine players fielded in by coach Nes Pamilar scoring at least two points.

“The cohesion in the team is starting to build up and it showed in the game,” said Pamilar in Filipino.

Cecille Cruzada had six points for Navy, which struggled to get past a solid Cagayan defense that gave up just 18 hits from 94 attempts.

Kamika Thipachot and Wenneth Eulalio tallied 14 points together for the Rising Suns, who also got a splendid outing from relief setter Relea Saet.

With Phomia Soraya rested for the bigger games ahead, Saet stepped up with 25 excellent sets in the last two frames.

Earlier, Air Force coasted to a surprisingly easy 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Far Eastern U for its first win in three matches.

The loss was Far Eastern U’s third straight, dimming the Lady Tamaraws’ chances of advancing to the six-team quarterfinals.

With setter Wendy Semana flashing superb form, the Air Women constantly found gaps on the Lady Tamaraws defense and posted a 42-30 edge on attack points.

Joy Cases and Maika Ortiz benefited from Semana’s performance, combining for 18 kills, leading the Air Women to victory.

Semana produced 22 excellent sets and also finished with eight points for Air Force, which dropped its first two games against Cagayan Province and Army last week.

Meanwhile, tournament organizer Sports Vision announced that the Air Force-FEU match will be shown on GMA News TV Channel 11 at 1 p.m. today while the Navy-Cagayan duel will be telecast on Monday.
