Unbeaten Army eyes 2nd in Shakey’s V-League

BUOYED by another straight-set victory, Army tries to seize solo second spot when it squares off with winless Philippine National Police today in the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 Open Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Armywomen are favored to claim a third straight win in the 2 p.m. clash with PNP, which opened the tournament with back-to-back losses.

With its attack working like a well-oiled machine, the Armywomen posted a 25-14, 25-13, 25-12 romp over Navy last Sunday.

Meralco seeks to get back on the winning track against Navy at 4 p.m.

The Power Spikers are aching to bounce back from a straight-set defeat to the Cagayan Rising Suns last Sunday.

A victory by the Power Spikers will push them closer to a quarterfinal spot in the season-ending tournament.

Lacking firepower and seemingly a step slower on defense, the Lady Sailors also bowed to the Armywomen last Sunday.

Navy hopes to put up a tougher fight with a squad powered by Michelle Laborte, Cecille Cruzada and Rosemarie Prochina. Laborte paced Navy’s losing cause against Army with nine points.

Against the Rising Suns, the Power Spikers couldn’t sustain their strong effort in the first set and then faded in the next two frames.

Coco Wang continued to be a bright spot for Meralco, finishing with 18 points. Still, Wang needs more support from the likes of Fille Cainglet and Stephanie Mercado if they want to survive Navy.

The Army Women look formidable at every position with Ma. Theresa Iratay doing a fine job setting up a bevy of veteran attackers in Mary Jean Balse, Nerissa Bautista and Jovelyn Gonzaga in the last two games.
