MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo head coach Bo Perasol was slapped a one-game ban by the UAAP on Wednesday for charging at a heckler after the heated Ateneo-La Salle match last Sunday.
Perasol will miss the Blue Eagles’ game against University of the East on Sunday.
UAAP secretary-treasurer Malou Isip told reporters after the emergency board meeting at the Smart Araneta Coliseum that the league does not condone such conduct from the Blue Eagles’ coach.
“The mission-vision of the UAAP is to promote highest level of sportsmanship. We want to be consistent on that. We want all the players, the coaches and officials to observe that behavior,” Isip said.
After the Green Archers’ 66-64 win over rival Blue Eagles, a fuming Perasol confronted a fan, identified as JJ Atayde, sitting at the patron section as he was on his way to the dugout.
Perasol said that the fan was saying “bad things” and singled him out.
Atayde, meanwhile, has been suspended for the remainder of the UAAP season 76 basketball tournament.
“We already banned so many persons who heckle or curse at the officials, so to be fair we just decided to ban him for the season so it won’t happen again,” Isip also said.
There were reports that a water bottle was also thrown at Perasol, but Isip said that was not included on the incident report submitted to the UAAP board.
