V-League: Cagayan Valley shoots down Army to remain unbeaten

MANILA, Philippines — Cagayan Valley validated its status as the team to reckon with as it steamrolled past Philippine Army, 25-9, 25-16, 25-20, in the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Thai import Kannika Thipachot led the way for the Lady Rising Suns, who upped their league-leading record to 6-0.

The Lady Troopers drew futile support at the offensive end with only Jovelyn Gonzaga to show in double-digit scoring with 12 points.

Army’s usual hitters Nene Bautista and Mary Jean Balse were held to just five points combined while Cagayan had more than enough help with Angeli Tabaquero and Wenneth Eulalio adding 12 points each.

Army got off to a flat start and struggled to get into its rhythm as it absorbed its first loss in four outings, half a game ahead of idle Meralco in second place.

Phomia Soraya, Cagayan’s other Thai reinforcement, also shone with 37 excellent sets.
