Cycling legends get own National Open division

10:50 AM November 16, 2010

The Cycling champions of yesteryears will have a division of their own when the first National Open championship in 25 years is flagged off on Dec. 6 in several venues.

Former Asian gold medalist Cesar Filosopo, the fabled Tour of Luzon’s ex-two-time champion Jess Garcia and a handful of ex-Olympians will be joining the Masters division of the event organized by the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines.

“If there are folks who can inspire our young cyclists, then they are our (past) champions and Tour of Luzon legends,” former Philippine Sports Commission chair Philip Ella Juico, the ICFP president, said.

“This will also be the chance for these cycling greats to relive their glory days even for a fleeting moment,” Juico added.

Former Asiad and Olympics campaigners Ben Evangelista, Rolando Guaves, Roberto Roxas and Roberto Quirimit are vying in the 10-lap Masters massed start which will take the riders from Tanay in Rizal all the way to the Amoranto Velodrome in Quezon City.
Paquito Rivas and Rolando Pagnanawon, two of the most colorful champion riders ever to race in the old Tour of Luzon, will also be joining even as a separate track competition will be held at the Velodrome in the week-long event.
