UAAP: Lady Falcons tame Tigresses; Baby Tams up
MANILA—Adamson snapped University of Santo Tomas’ seven-game run in women’s play and Far Eastern University also ended La Salle Zobel’s unbeaten streak in juniors action of the UAAP basketball tournament over the weekend at the Blue Eagle Gym.
The Lady Falcons, who are bidding for a third straight crown, downed the Tigresses, 67-55, behind a balanced offensive from Angelica Ortega, Anna Buendia, Jinky Balasta and Snow Penaranda and improved their record to 6-2.
The Baby Tams also picked up their sixth victory in eight games after stunning the Junior Archers, 62-56, with Jerie Pingoy firing 21 points.
Article continues after this advertisementIn the men’s division, Adamson’s high-leaping guard Alex Nuyles clinched the Accel-3XVI UAAP Player of the Week presented by Gatorade following impressive performances that helped lift the Falcons to a second-best 6-2 record.
The 6-foot-2 Nuyles knocked in a short jumper with eight-tenths of a second left as the Falcons escaped with a 68-66 decision over La Salle last Sunday.
Three days earlier, Nuyles exploded for a game-high 21 points on top of five rebounds, three steals and two assists in the Falcons’ rout of the University of the Philippines, 72-46 .
Article continues after this advertisement“He (Nuyles) proved that he can shoot the game-winners and he’s very serious in this campaign,” said Adamson coach Leo Austria.
In men’s badminton, National University remained unbeaten after tripping Ateneo, 3-2, and shutting out Adamson, 5-0, over the weekend at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
Ateneo and FEU also stayed perfect in the women’s contest after downing separate opponents.
The Lady Eagles blanked Adamson, 5-0, and nipped La Salle, 3-2, while the Lady Tamaraws overwhelmed UST, 4-1, and Adamson, 5-0.
