MANILA—John Tiongson, a veteran of local bowling tournaments, beat Nilo Penado to grab the championship of the First Tenpin Development Match Play Monday at Green Valley in Pasig City.
Tiongson, who disposed of Paolo Darroca in the semifinals, rolled a three-game series of 212-192-200 against Penado’s 247-174-220.
Tiongson likewise shocked four-time World Cup champion Paeng Nepomuceno in the second round.
Penado, who achieved a rare perfect game in upsetting 2006 World Bowling king and 2010 Asian Games gold medalist Engelberto “Biboy” Rivera in the first round, advanced to the finals by ousting Marc Serac.
Serac bested Tajee Yusingco in the initial round and Kap Aguila in the round of 8 to place third.
“It was my first time to play against Nilo,” said the 37-year-old Rivera, one of four 2010 Philippine Sportswriters Association Athlete of the Year awardee. “He’s good and really played well.”
The competition was the first project of the newly formed Tenpin Bowling Sports Development of the Philippines headed by former Pasig Mayor and ex-Philippine Sports Commission commissioner Mario S. Raymundo. It was held in partnership with the Philippine Bowling Congress (PBC) headed by Toti Lopa.
