State U sweeps UAAP swimming meet

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines pulled off a UAAP swimming sweep despite a protest staged by other teams on the eligibility of one of its swimmers.

MVP Claire Adorna captured four golds to power the Lady Maroons to a fifth straight women’s title with 587 points at Trace Aquatics Center in Los Baños, Laguna, over the weekend.

Their male counterparts garnered 452 points to bag the championship for the second time in four seasons.

Adorna set league records in the 400m free (4:33.69 minutes) and 200m back (2:23.53) on the way to a four-gold, one-silver, one-bronze romp.

UP reigned even as swimmers from University of Santo Tomas and La Salle walked out of the women’s event in protest against the eligibility of rookie Mikee Bartolome.

Bartolome, who won a gold in the 4×50 medley, competed after securing a temporary restraining order that stopped the league from implementing the two-year residency rule. Jasmine W. Payo
