UAAP judo: Ateneo reclaims men’s title; La Salle ends title drought

MANILA, Philippines — Fierce rivals Ateneo and De La Salle clinched separate titles in the UAAP Season 76 judo tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym on Monday.

The Blue Eagles regained the men’s crown it previously held three seasons ago with amassed 47 points highlighted by gold medal finishes by MVP Matt Jao in the +100kgs event and Anjo Gumila in the -90kgs on top of three silvers and six bronzes.

University of the Philippines finished second with 35 points while La Salle ended up in close third with 32 points.

La Salle’s women’s team though, made up for its third place finish in the men’s division with a monumental gold medal — ending the school’s 21-year title drought in judo.

The Lady Archers, led by Nikki More, Justine Pongase and  Marjorie Santiago, with a total of 42 points, topped the Lady Eagles and University of the East Lady Warriors. Ateneo and UE wound up tied with 29 points but the Lady Eagles bagged second place due to superior quotient.

Perennial powerhouse University of Santo Tomas settled for fourth place in both divisions.
