MANILA, Philippines – “Go USTe!” was the unlikely cheer coming from students and supporters of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers featured in a video circulating in Facebook.
The 25-second clip shows the DLSU crowd cheering for their rivals the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers by the end of the UAAP basketball finals on Saturday.
The video, uploaded in Facebook with the caption “Lasallians cheering for UST…#respect for UST…Kudos to their players Abdul, Ferrer, Teng (best players I’ve seen in UAAP history),” has already been shared 1,833 times as of Monday afternoon.
Netizens who shared the video said it was an example of “great sportsmanship” and “class.”
One user wrote, “After the smoke of battle cleared, after all is said and done, this heart-wrenching scene caught on video will be forever etched in my memory… Showing respect and gratitude is more important than winning a title. I was never prouder to be a LaSallite…”
Others commented that respect instead of mockery or “alaskahan” should always prevail in sports.
DLSU on Saturday won the UAAP basketball championship after beating UST in overtime, 71-69.
