MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine men’s football squad continued its rise in the world rankings, leaping four spots higher to 137 in the latest list released by International Football Federation (Fifa) Thursday.
The Philippines Azkals overtook Thailand, which slid to 143 from 139, in the newest rankings to become the highest-placed nation in Southeast Asia.
A huge boost to the Filipinos’ phenomenal rise was the thrilling 3-1 victory over Pakistan, which helped retain the Philippine Peace Cup crown earlier this week.
Other SEA powerhouses Vietnam (151), Malaysia (160) and Indonesia (162) saw improvement in their respective standings but still ranked lower than the Philippines.
