GRAPPLER Louis Smolka delivered vicious strikes and dethroned Ale Cali as Pacific Xtreme Combat flyweight title Saturday night at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Pinned against the cage, Cali could do nothing but parry the Hawaiian challenger’s flurry that forced the referee to end the fight with less than two minutes gone in the second round.
“I’m sorry for letting you down,’’ Cali told a disappointed home crowd. “I’ll be back.’’
The highly dangerous striker from Davao City, who was defending his title for the second time, suffered a cut on the forehead after Smolka took him down early.
But Cali, who beat four foes by TKO and one by decision before Saturday’s fight, got back on his feet and hurt the submission expert from Guam-based 808 Top Team with blows to the body.
Filipino Crisanto Pitpitunge also lost after Korean Park Han-bin submitted the former bantamweight champion with a rear-naked choke in the third round.
