SAN SEBASTIAN registered the first upset in the 2nd Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) by downing UAAP champion National University, 80-75, even as reigning titlist Hope Christian High School and Ateneo rolled to their second straight win Sunday at Chiang Kai Shek College gym in Manila.
The Staglets, last year’s losing finalists, leaned on a 29-point explosion in the payoff period to notch their second straight win in Group A and hand the Bullpups their first defeat since completing a 16-game UAAP sweep.
Hope Christian repulsed De La Salle-Zobel, 80-74, thanks to the 34-point performance of Ateneo-bound John Apacible, while the Eaglets rode on the heroics of Thirdy Ravena to outlast Jose Rizal University, 72-71.
San Beda, coming off a 20-game NCAA sweep, crushed St. Stephen’s High School, 91-65, while host CKSC posted an 83-80 win over the debuting Mapua Red Robins.
