Megafiber parbusters coast to Fil Champs title
BAGUIO—Rene Unson carded 29 Molave points and towed Megafiber to its maiden Fil Championship crown with a whopping 16-point victory over Camp John Hay Thursday in the 64th San Miguel Fil-Am golf tournament at Baguio Country Club here.
Mari Hechanova backed up Unson with 27, Ben Jacinto carded 23 and Bunye added 22 as Megafiber closed out with 101—its lowest production in four days—and a 438 aggregate in the five-to-play, four-to-count event.
Poch Hernandez didn’t count with a 21.
Article continues after this advertisementCJH, reeling from an earlier infraction, rallied with a final-round 109 but settled for a 422, six points clear of Pugo Adventure which pooled a 94-416 for third place.
Manila Southwoods shot 105 and placed fourth with 408 in the annual event backed by San Miguel Corp. and presented by Toyota.
“Finally, we nailed the big one,” said Albert Garcia, team manager of Megafiber which opened with 114, seized the lead with 120 on Day 2 and carded 103 on Wednesday.
Article continues after this advertisementNueva Ecija, meanwhile, capped its back-to-back title drive in the Am Championship with 110 points for 410 to beat Camp John Hay by 10 at the John Hay layout.
CJH closed out with 106 for 400 and beat Philippine Navy, which shot 103-392, for second spot. Dragon Golfers (106-380), Baguio City Golf Team-1 (95-343) and Forest Hills (78-341) followed in that order.
John Hay’s Rudy Lockey copped the individual plum with 112, seven points ahead of Navy’s Antonio Mendoza and Emil Alviar and Forest Hills’ Rodolfo Villa.
Clyde Cabreros shot 30 points, Fred Puckett carded a 29 and Lee Ki-seung and Park Jong-won each had 25 for CJH’s closing 109 and 422. Puckett took the individual title with 127, beating Pugo Adventure’s Goody Ignacio (119) and Unson (118).
Pugo Adventure (114-109-99-94) and Southwoods both ran out of holes to salvage a podium finish.
In Fil Flight A, Saver’s Comclark wavered with a 76 but held on to win the title over Baguio Country Club by three, also at BCC.
Vivencio Pecson carded 22 points while Rene Mangio, Noel Yamzon and Senen Quiambao added 19, 18 and 17, respectively, as Saver’s Comclark wound up with a four-day total of 358.
BCC closed out better with a 79 but fell out of it with 355 as Bong de Guzman and Philip del Carmen scored 22 points apiece and Sam Diciano and Jun Basabica chipped in 18 and 17, respectively.
Saver’s Comclark’s Willy Valencia and BCC’s Benjie Favis turned in 17 and 16 points, respectively, and failed to count.
Villamor, led by Art Alabanza’s 26 points, settled for third with 342 after a 78 while Camp Aguinaldo, with Caloy Iñigo and Herminio Salivio each shooting a 21, assembled an 80 for fourth at 330.
Golf F/Veterans Team shot the day’s best score of 86 anchored on Domingo Manuel and Danny Gonzales’ identical 26 points, and totaled 327 to beat Villa Cacho (82-318), Okinawa Golf Team (77-297) and BCC-2 (51-265).
BCC, meanwhile, drew 26 points from Benito Ang while Billy Dulay, Nelson Tandoc and Ben Liclican backed him up with 24, 21 and 20 points, respectively, to edge Guam Seniors, 328-327, for the Am Flight A title.
Joe Moore produced 27 while Ed Briones added 26, Henry Leon Guerrero shot 22 and Andy Leon Guerrero tossed in 17 for Guam Seniors, which pooled a 92 but fell short by one.
Christian Motor made a 76 while Pines Golf Club of California had an 85 as they finished tied for third at 311 followed by the Federation of Philippine Senior Golfers (84-310), PR Bank -Isabela (76-303), Golf F/Veterans (70-262) and Paradise Greens of California (66-259).
Fil Am Golf of Florida seized the Senior Fil-B diadem with a 306 after a 78, winning by 32 points over TNT Golf Team, which had a 274 after a 78, while Squares & Compass Golf of Nueva Ecija came in third at 270 after a 60.
Fil Hawaiian ruled Am-B with 312 after a 76 with Guam Seals (63-272) finishing second and The Cliffs Golf & Beach Club (60-245) third.
